faux wood grain painted mantel

The brick is real and the small antique organ in the foreground is real, but the mantel, burl veneer surround and mahogany baseboard are all faux wood grain in this cozy living room. I did this job at Christmas time 2005 right after Hunter was born.

This faux wood finish was done with shellac, alkyd glazes and oil varnish back in the day before I solved the water-based faux wood painting dilemma; now I have a customizable “green” painting solution/system for almost every high-end faux wood finish like this one, which previously required the use of traditional materials.
